Gameplay Basics

1. What Hockey Is

Hockey is played with a small black puck. Each team has six players on the ice: one goalie and five skaters. The main objective is simple: get the puck into the opponent’s net while preventing them from scoring on you.

2. Starting and Restarting Play

The game begins with a puck drop at center ice. After goals or stoppages, the referee drops the puck again to restart play. Possession alternates based on faceoffs, keeping the game fair and fast-paced.

3. Player Movement

Players can skate forward and backward, pass, and shoot. You cannot throw or hold the puck with your hands, though you can briefly stop it or knock it down. Positioning and movement depend on your role and the zone you’re in.

4. Zones Overview

  • Defensive Zone — your own end. Protect your net.

  • Neutral Zone — middle of the ice. Transition between defense and offense.

  • Offensive Zone — opponent’s end. Focus on attacking and scoring.

Most rules about where you can be on the ice are tied to these zones.

5. Scoring

A goal counts when the puck completely crosses the goal line. The team with the most goals at the end of three periods wins.

6. Game Duration

Games are played in three periods of 20 minutes each. The clock stops whenever play stops, so games usually take longer than an hour in real time.

7. Beginner Tips

Don’t stress about memorizing every rule right away. Focus on skating, passing, and shooting. Watch games, practice on your own or in lessons, and understanding will come naturally.
