Joining a League

League options vary a lot by age and experience. Before signing up, review our Start Hockey by Age guide to make sure you’re choosing the right level and environment. Now that you’ve completed the hard part—from learning how to skate, to buying equipment, to building basic skills—you’re one step closer to becoming a hockey player.

Joining a hockey league is usually pretty straightforward. While details can vary by location and age group, the general process looks like this:

First, register the player with USA Hockey. This step is required for most leagues and provides insurance coverage and eligibility to participate in sanctioned programs.

Next, find a local ice rink and explore its hockey programs. If you’re just starting out, recreational leagues are highly recommended. These leagues focus on fundamentals and provide a more relaxed, beginner-friendly environment.

Once you’ve chosen a program, register for the season. Most leagues begin in August or September, and registration may require documents such as a birth certificate.

Some recreational leagues hold tryouts, but many do not—especially at beginner levels.

Finally, be prepared for the cost. Hockey registration fees can add up, typically ranging from $350 to $1,250 USD, depending on the league, skill level, and location.
